I didn't use the RPMs because I didn't understand how they work when the
compilation procedure requires you to specify the sound card at compile
time.

You mean the compilation instructions?

I didn't see any procedures for installing the RPMs.  What sound card
would the RPMs be compiled with?

I would compile from source specifying your sound card as described on
the alsa web site.
