Thanks for your help and others advice on this matter. I ran the
diagnostics you requested. But, I am not sure how to interpret the
results or how to act on those results, so I copy & pasted them below:

Let me know if that is enough of /var/log/messages to diagnose the
problem. Just to double check things again, I went back to the
www.alsa.org web page again to verify the modules.conf file and
.asoundrc against those provided on the SB Live! page. They are exactly
correct, expect for the last three lines that Jarod's guide says to add
under the "Save & restore settings":

# Save & restore settings
post-install snd-card-0 /usr/sbin/alsactl restore >/dev/null 2>&1 || :
pre-remove snd-card-0 /usr/sbin/alsactl store >/dev/null 2>&1 || :
alias char-major-195 nvidia

I could not find any mention or reference to these lines at the ALSA web
page:

http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/doc-php/template.php?company=Creative+Labs&card=Soundblaster+Live&chip=EMU10K1&module=emu10k1#expl

Are they necessary for SB Live cards? Could these lines have anything
to do with the current problem?

Do these diagnostics help to figure out why aplay or any of the ALSA
mixers do not work? I would like to understand why ALSA is not working
if you have any insight, or if anyone else can offer any further
advice.

Many Thanks,

Chad
