Odd. If the driver works for one kernel, it should work for another.
I've managed to get it working with quite a wide variety of kernels
(ATrpms, Red Hat, SGI and home-brew, all without incident).

It *should* be possible to get the nvidia driver working in that
situation... But as always, ymmv, depending on a myriad of different
factors... :)
