I see a lot of anti-802.11b comments for MythTV, but I see no reason for
anti-10Mbit ethernet. I can push 3 gigabytes across ethernet in an hour,
and that's just fine. As you say, 3000kbps is quite nice, and not just
for MPEG4. That's more than twice the rate of VCD MPEG1, and almost
twice the rate I use for my MPEG2 out of my PVR-250's.

802.11b is useable, IF you have a good solid max speed connection and no
other traffic, and your drivers are efficient and stable. My own
experience with 802.11b is that there is usually some type of glitchy
behavior every now and then. ;)

Actually, when I was prototyping my MythTV box, I didn't have an
available ethernet port so I used a USB 802.11b adapter until I got it
all up and running. It worked just fine with the WinTV GO card and MPEG4
set to 2500kpbs. I didn't even give the bandwidth a thought until I
installed my PVR-250's and discovered the default bitrate was too high.
After I lowered it it worked ok, but only because the wireless
connection was at max speed due to proximity.

My laptop has builtin 802.11b and I can use it as a wireless frontend. I
tested it once but I haven't done that since. I think it's good enough
for occasional fun playing around, but I certainly would design a MythTV
~ system to depend on it in any way. YMMV.
