solved my own trouble. must be suffering from lack of sleep after all --
wasn't typing the full path. that solved it.
now to bed.

Subject: [mythtv-users] test_ioctl: command not found?
I'm getting the strangest error lately -- when I tried to change my
Freestyle's capture settings with test_ioctl, I keep getting a "command
not found" in bash. I can't figure it out for the life of me -- I've
tried changing the file's ownership, rwx properties, directories...
What could I be doing wrong?
(short of being sleep-deprived because I'm too anxious to get this box
up and running)
