Thanks for the heads up, I'll check it out.  BTW, do you know how hard
it would be to map serial data to keyboard data?  Or would it be as
simple as writing characters to the serial port?

Here's another idea for you -

this thing takes a PS2 keyboard input and emulates a USB keyboard:

Take the USB side and plug it into your cable box.
Take the PS2 clock and data lines and wire them up to some bits on your
serial or parallel port of your mythbox.  Bitbang those bits to emulate
a PS2 keyboard.
