Try setting a display size in XF86Config. Start from something like
240x160. Smaller values -> larger fonts.

But recording works? Strange. Check the card settings (mpeg2 hardware
encoder vs. mjpeg hardware encoder). Try the dd tests again. Also check
if you have the "Use hardware decoder" option set (not in setup, but in
the frontend config menus)

Sometimes the ivtv modules won't initialise correctly on bootup/loading.
Try a reboot. If dd did work mythtv should be a problem. 

Give 0.1.10pre2 with Chris's patches a try. I have ivtv-0.1.10-pre2-ck23
running nicely. I hear lot's of good things about the 07D patch level.

There was somthing on the mythtv list sometime, about having to patch
the lirc code for the second device to use other devices or such.
