I think I've found something:

It seems like the STB cards use an extra audio chip, the TEA6300 
(=SOFAC: SOund and FAder Control)
 From the google search I found this, it won't cure the problem directly 
but may give a starting point. Mind the 'tvaudio' line..

I know this chip, I used it in a mp3 car project once. It has volume 
control for Left and Right and Fader control for 4 outputs and bass, 
treble, source input select  etc.

So if your TV card has this chip, you have a mixer also.. :-)
And as far as I know every BT848/878 has a mixer too, so you could have 
a total of three mixers (that's including the mixer of your default 
sound card)..
