In your motherboard system bios, most recent motherboards have shutdowns and 
alarms you can set based on cpu temperature.  Just set the value to a safe 
limit.  I think Athlons are safe to 80C IIRC, so I just set mine to alarm at 
70C, and shutdown at 75C, incase I wasn't around to hear the alarm.
