Try

mplayer -vo help

and check for a video output drivers called "ivtvosd".

Patch is at http://kmos.org/~ckennedy/ivtv/

If you are using Red Hat/Fedora simply use the ATrpms' mplayer with
-vo ivtvosd (plus using the right driver, of course).
