Yes it was a lot of work, but I really wanted to try to get it working.  I
used the perl script before, and I found it a little sluggish, there was a
noticable lag between pressing a button and when you could press a button
again.  Plus I never could get it to start up automatically via
~/.kde/Autostart.  So I did what works for me best, but ymmv.

I should say that others got it working with far less difficulty than I had!

Sounds like a lot of work!

Is the final result really worth it, though?   I'm using the Perl script
posted here earlier, and it works great.  The responsiveness is perfect,
and I find that it works better than my previous configuration with lirc
and an IR remote.
