Dan is right, there is only an indirect dependency on mplayer by
mythvideo (and also mythmkmovie) coming from mythtv-suite:

# rpm --test -e mplayer
error: Failed dependencies:
mplayer is needed by (installed) mythvideo-0.15.1-55.rhfc2.at
mplayer >= 4:0.92 is needed by (installed) mplayerplug-in-2.66-16.rhfc2.at
/usr/bin/mencoder is needed by (installed) mythmkmovie-1.0.1-3.rhfc2.at

If you ask for mythtv-suite you ask for everything that could be used
for setting up a complete mythtv box (mythtv-suite is a convenience
meta-package for pulling it as much ythtv as possible).

But the singular components have minimal dependencies, so that you can
create pure mythtv backends/frontends and the like.
