Well, it isn't, not really.  As long as you've got DMA on, even a 
4500RPM notebook drive would probably be good enough.

Hard drives transfers are measured in megabytes per second; MythTV does 
things in mega _bits_  per second.

3300kbps (3.3Mbps) is putting less than half a megabyte per second to 
the drive: (3300*1024) / 8, which should be well within the range of any 
of the modern drives these days.
