thanks :) I figured it out just after I'd sent the email.. seems I had a 
corrupted kde install (although it was running fine).. I just opened 
synaptic.. found anything to do with kde and installed it... then there 
was no more seg fault...

when I got to the "apt-get install mythtv-suite" stage during the 
initial install.. it started complaining about kdeartwork for some 
reason - I couldn't figure out what was wrong with it.. so did a 
complete re-install of kde..  I probably messed that up which led to the 
above problem..
