[mythtv-users] ivtv / pvr250 MCE problem...

Yes, I realize that, but if you don't have the ivtv source, then you don't
have the ivtvfwextract.pl script....and I don't recall ever reading
"download the ivtv source files to get ivtvfwextract.pl" So stop being such
a harda$$ and pay attention. Not all of us are Linux gods....a LOT of us
are Linux n00bs...myself included. This is a whole new world for me that
I'm VERY interested in, but not very proficient in....

If you were a Windows n00b and I had told you to do a simple task compiling
some driver program from scratch....you would be asking a lot of questions
as well (especially since the Windows world involves EXE's and not much
compiling if you're a normal user). If you kept getting people trying to
knock you down a few levels because of the way you were reading something
(correct or incorrect, understanding it or not understanding it) you'd get a
little PO'd too.

This list has been AWESOME for me, but every time I see someone bashing
another person for an "unclear" section of instructions it gets me a little
miffed. We're all here for the same goal.....so there is always a nice way
to say something...and a "mean" way to say the same thing. You can be a
harda$$, without being a harda$$ if you know what I mean.

I for one, am not always looking for step-by-step instructions on every task
I can't figure out, but a little nudge in the right direction always helps
me to find my own resolution. Sometimes, I need more than a nudge.

Keep that in mind when your typing up a response to someone. RTFM is
usually the first step in any Linux project, but before you can read
it...you gotta find it. Which is sometimes easier said than done. So cut
us n00bs a little slack....you were a n00b at some point as well.

Simple instructions like "re-compile the kernel with lirc support" are a
HUUUUGE task for me. Why? Because I have to go and find all the info I
need ahead of time and read through it to figure out what the hell I'm
supposed to be doing. Some of these small tasks have taken me a week to
figure out. So you can imagine what goes through my head when I read
"extract the firmware with the ivtvfwextract.pl script from ivtv 'utils'
dir". Well I go looking for the script, but it doesn't exist. So I do a
web search for it...I find a crapload of documents that mention the name,
but don't offer a download. I only got past this step due to a mistake I
made.

And for the record, ivtvfwextract.pl is included with the ivtv package. I
quote again:
"extract the firmware with the ivtvfwextract.pl script from ivtv 'utils'
dir".
