[mythtv-users] PDA / remote

I would be very interested in something like this. I have an iPaq 5450, and have previously experimented with Netremote, Girder, and myHTPC on Windows. It worked really well, and with the addition of J. River Media Center, had some great functionality for browsing your MP3 library, etc.

Switching to myth is a downside on one point, because it seems the only remote functionality is either a keyboard, or IR. I'd hate to have to spend money on getting IR to work when I already have the PDA.

Anyway, myHTPC is pretty weak, and from what I understand not being actively developed, so I looked at Myth as an alternative. Plus, I'm a huge supporter of Linux anyway, and would prefer to run on Linux. I hate giving up netremote though, and Girder does not run on Windows. You might check out the website for these products just to see what's out there. I would be more than willing to help you out with this any way I can. I'm not much of a developer, but I do know some PHP. I could certainly test parts of it for you. I'm in the process of building a test system for Myth so I can see how well it's going to work. At this point, I'm more interested in the MP3 and DVD playback than the TV functionality because I don't have a TV tuner card right now.

Anyway, let me know if you need some help testing it. I'll be more than happy to test it for at mythmusic and mythdvd, as well as mythvideo.

Here's the websites:

Girder - http://www.girder.nl
Netremote - http://www.netremote.org
J. River - http://musicex.com/mediacenter

Thanks,

Subject: [mythtv-users] PDA / remote

Inspired by a recent thread, I have decided to try my hand at creating an Apache / PHP based front-end remote accessible from a remote, laptop or any other network device with a browser.

I have successfully installed and tested a program called kbde that will take a shell command and through its own driver, send a keypress to the system. This in conjunction with a form that uses the system() function in PHP can execute keypresses remotely.

I have created a very basic PHP form page with all of the basic keys from the keypresses used by Mythfront end but it currently lacks formatting. If anyone is interested in helping me finish this project, let me know -- I could use some help in giving it some polish. I hope to call it mythwebremote.

This does not go without mentioning the very implicit security concern with allowing a web-accessible to execute keypresses on your system. I have no idea what the worse case scenario would be, but I am sure those more familiar with security will post concerns to the list.

Contact me on or off list with your interest.
