Good god, did you type the last paragraph with your eyes closed?
Anyway, if you do `ps -ef|grep backend` you will get several of
processes, depending on what the backend is doing.

I would guess that you are having pemission problems.  Restart X like
you did above.  Then open a terminal and run mythfrontend manually.  See
what kind of error it is reporting in the terminal and then post that. 
We should be able to help you with that info.
