I think I fixed my own problem- at least somewhat.  I had checked "Master
Backend Override" when there was not a central storage location.  Once I
unchecked this option, things seem to be recording properly now (hope I'm
not jumping the gun).

The status port (6544) still does not work on the slave backend....
