Firstly, they are .nuv files not .muv files.

If you record from a PVR250/350 or a DVB card, they are straight MPEG2.
I think the ATSC cards also produce straight MPEG2.

If you record using a plain old capture card you record in MPEG4 or
RTJPEG. However the file format is slightly modified in mythtv so things
like mplayer won't play the them without some patching IIRC.

What is the "file command"?
