I had the same Problem.
After some searching in the sourcecode I found out that 
some data in the mythconverg-database was preventing mythtranscode from working.

Without researching the problem deeper, I did a

DELETE FROM recordedmarkup WHERE mark=-1;

and mythtranscode started work!

Maybe somebody can contribute some background information?
