I tried to upgrade via apt, but the x server crashed on reboot. I
upgraded the kernel, removed the old nvidia drivers, then installed the
6106 driver and kmdl all through atrpms. On reboot I got a message
saying the kernel module couldn't be found and there were no useable
screens. I am not sure what I did wrong.

However it is very easy to install the package from nvidia here:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_ia32_1.0-6106.html
These worked without a hitch.
