No.   I start it up from ~/.xsession, immediately before starting
fluxbox, which, AFAIK, does not do this.

There are a two things I imagine may have caused this:

1. mythfrontend crashing after a newly-created recording attempted to
   change the channel while I was watching live tv;

2. the transcoding process failing strangely after started by
   mythfrontend

But in either case, I don't understand why it would have forked off a
copy of itself that would stay around (or alternatively, why the GUI
would die without the process also dying)

That is something I hadn't thought of, but I grepped around in
~/.fluxbox and didn't find anything that looked suspicious.
