I see that.  I have actually been working on this on-and-off for the 
last couple of months.  Haven't had a lot of time to spend on it.  Most 
of the research was done with google in the beginning.  The wiki has 
some useful info, but I didn't see anything about HDTV there.

Not sure I could add anything to the modeline discussion except for HDTV 
modes. Well someone mentioned in the ModeLinesHowTo they couldn't get 
videogen to work with -m858x480.  It is because the horizontal 
resolution has to be divisible by 8.  Actually, all four of the 
horizontal numbers need to be divisible by eight.  Also, the 3rd number 
minus the 2nd number has to be divisible by 8.  Ouch my head hurts.  (By 
divisible by eight I mean *evenly* divisible by eight.)
