[mythtv-users] newbie graphics driver question (MX 440)

Hi

To make sure that the nvidia driver (and not the generic nv driver) is used
you can check (as root) with 'lsmod ¦ grep nvidia'. This should print a line
with the nvidia driver. Make sure that you have set 'Driver "nvidia"' in
your XF86Config file under "Device". Finally you can test it with
'glxgears'. There should be a huge difference with or without the nvidia
driver in terms of frames per second (on my Athlon 1800 I get about 300 FPS
with 1024x768).

Hi,

Thanks for the reply, I did it the other way round I think.

Updated my kernel thanks to the ATrpms on stock FC1 (from 2.4.22-1.2115.nptl
to 4.22-1.2188), then (using said ATrpms again) updated the graphics driver.

I've never seen the display settings window show anything other than geforce
4 (generic) and aren't sure if it should display geforce 4 MX440 (the actual
card) and if this should have changed after installing the new driver.
Probably worrying over nothing, after all I do see that nice nVidia splash
screen so I guess I should be happy.

Thanks again,
Toby

Hi,

The order in which you made the changes is important.
I'll assume you installed the nvidia driver on your
original FC1 kernel and then updated to
4.22-1.2188.nptl from ATrpms. If so, you will need to
reinstall nvidia on your new kernel.

Again assuming that is what is going on, you need to
make sure you obtain the matching kernel-source for
your specific kernel. To do that become root:

# apt-get update

# apt-get install kernel-source#2.4.22-1.2188.nptl

Then run the nvidia shell script just as you did
before.

Hope that helps.
