Did you try recording in raw mode?  (I know this method doesn't always 
work right, I experienced this first hand with the General Instrument 
STB, which is in reality a repackaged Motorola DCT-1000)

If you've tried that, does the STB your using have any sort of control 
port on it?  IE a db9, or a IR port?  I'm unfamiliar with DirectTV, as 
it costs a grand to get setup with DirectTV up here.
