[mythtv-users] lirc stopped working

I have lirc compiled for "native support".
At some point of my activities to get tvout working, lirc has stopped
working.

I have a streamzap usb remote and patched lirc-0.7.0pre2 sources.
I've removed all traces of the old lirc that came with mandrake.
the sources are compiled and installed; lircd runs and irw gets
remote keys. ~/.mythtv/lircrc has the same stuff that worked before.
irxevent isn't running.
/dev/lirc/0 is the streamzap device, and the device node is supplied by
the usbdevfs. /dev/lirc0 is a link to it created in hope of making
things work

However, mythfrontend starts with:
$ mythfrontend
2004-03-01 08:37:31 mythfrontend version: 0.14.20040123-1 www.mythtv.org
2004-03-01 08:37:31 Enabled verbose msgs : important general
mythtv: could not connect to socket
mythtv: No such file or directory
lirc_init failed for mythtv, see preceding messages
2004-03-01 08:37:33 Registering Internal as a media playback plugin.
2004-03-01 08:37:34 Registering MythMusic Media Handler as a media
handler

What is this "socket" that myth can't connect to?
What is this file or directory that myth can't find?
How can I find out why myth's native lirc is failing?
