Michael:

You can encode 2 shows and watch 1 without a problem?  Are you using MPEG4?  On my Athlon 1800+ I can barely watch LiveTV (ie encode 1 show and watch it at the same time) when using MPEG4 (granted I am using the kerneldeint playback filter, I will do some tests without that filter and see how much processing time that's taking.)

Even that seems rather slow.  I've got an XP2400 Fedora C1, TV out on Matrox 
G400, and I can almost encode 3 shows simultaneously while watching 1.  I get 
occasional hiccups in the video playback.  Recording 2 shows while watching 1 
gives around 75% CPU usage with no hiccups at all.  Encoding with Hauppaauge 
401 cards mpeg4 480x480, btaudio, and default settings all around.
