Scratch all that! Although it would still be good to see exactly what
you did to make the digital out work on the Audigy, I managed in one
last hurrah to get my AC97 codec optical sound output working with 5.1
sound. (It's an Asus P4PE motherboard and an AD1980 chip, in case
others search for this info.)
mplayer wouldn't do 5.1 output if I specified -ao alsa9:spdif, or any
other -ao option in fact. When I had those options set, I would just
get the left and right stereo outputs -- no centre, left rear or right
rear channels. However mplayer will output the 5.1 sound if you just
give -ac hwac3, as an argument. In short, I had the right argument, I
just had too many things specified. My current mplayer command line
setting is:
mplayer dvd:// -cdrom-device %d -fs -zoom -quiet -monitoraspect 16:9 -vo
xv -ac hwac3,
No -ao option whatsoever.
