Sounds like the wrong set of Nvidia drivers to me. I had that problem
too. Bootup and X worked just fine but switching to console gave me a
blackish screen and stayed that way. 
Solution: upgrade to 5536 drivers. They do even work with 2.6.x kernels
on the machine I'm writing from.
