Not sure if this is your problem or not, but on my system, if I run
ivtvfbctl /dev/fb0
(which I thought was a read-only command?), it doubles the screen
height, and as a result distorts all OSD (it is now twice as high).
To me this doesn't make sense. Is this similar to what you have
experienced?
For me, the solution is simple: don't run ivtvfbctl ;-).
