You can try connecting your TV-out to your television NOW, without
MythTV and make sure it works.  (get Gnome/KDE to display on the TV)

You may have to make some modifications to XF86Config as in the 
MythTV instructions, but it costs you no money to try it first.
(other than maybe the price of a S-video cable)
