It is good. That means that you are getting the analog signal
to the card. Playback for DVDs means that your output sliders
are probably right. Almost every time the missing link is that
you need to mark your input for "CAPTUR" and to turn up the
"Capture" slider.

No, that wouldn't be it. For the sake of getting the job done,
lets use plain old "alsamixer". There is  an independent slider
that controls the "Capture" level used for recording. This is
usually several items to the right of "Line".
