I use a MyBlaster.  I don't have to use lirc which makes the whole 
process a LOT easier.  Search the mailing list archives for "MyBlaster" 
and see how easy it is to get it working.

Sure, it's not the $1.50-in-parts solution, but having originally tried 
that, this MyBlaster solution "just works".
