That was my guess too. I changed the path to /usr and enabled LIRC in
settings.pro, recompiled and installed. No difference. The reason for
reverting back to precompiled packages was that I could not get MythVideo to
work. 
(Anybody know a guide on how to compile and install from CVS source? :) )

To reinstall via apt-get I first did "apt-get remove mythtv" and then
"apt-get install mythtv-suite".

I have checked and there is only one version installed of mythfrontend.
