It's possible DVI is giving you fits.  On boot, the card and the TV will 
  negotiate which modes are possible.  If the TV doesn't mention the 
HDTV modes, or the card ignores them, you're out of luck.  This is the 
reason I went with a VGA->component adaptor (Key Digital) way back when. 
  If you can connect a Windows box to the TV, I seem to recall the 
existence of some diagnostic utilities which might tell you what DVI 
negotiated.
