Actually, with SMP, the audio and video encode go onto separate CPU's, 
and you get about a 30% speedup.  I've tried turning on the multithread 
options in transcode, too, but they actually slowed things down.

I was just about to comment about this.  Even nice set at zero doesn't 
really give you any benefit.  tiny amounts.  Gavin and I did quite a few 
tests of the settings before deciding on what worked best.
