 While I understand your viewpoint, this doesn't have to be 
an either-or scenario. The monitor program could detect that 
a backend had become wedged and collect logs before 
restarting it. The monitor would then email all the information
it had to the sysadmin. 

 My backend has started misbehaving after the latest atrpm 
upgrade and I've become tempted to write a little script to do 
this for me. If I do, I'll share. Anyone have a reference to the 
protocol handy?
