These are the parameters I use with mencoder for using XviD

Audio params to mencoder = "-oac mp3lame -lameopts aq=0:cbr=128 "
Video params to mencoder = "-ovc xvid -xvidencopts 
bitrate=900:me_quality=6:max_bframes=2:hq_ac=1:cartoon=1:vhq=4:bvhq=1:aspect=4.0/3.0"
