In /etc/inittab at the top there should be something like:
id:2:initdefault:
which means your default runlevel is 2.

Then, check and make sure that in you rc2.d directory you still have
something like S20alsa. (In debian, the rc2.d directory is located:
/etc/rc2.d) The 2 in rc2.d should correspond to the runlevel you are
in.

Also when dealing with modules and services, it's a good idea to let
people know what distro you are using because different distros put
things in different places.
