I asked this on the Lirc list with no response, and since it seems to
be a general build environment problem, I was hoping someone over here
may know the answer:

I'm setting up a dedicated frontend running a Mandrake linux box
running 2.6.3-7mdk trying to install Lirc from CVS (September 3rd) and
what's happening is that when I run make it basically spins in
circles:

You will have to use the lirc_serial kernel module.
