The interface makes sense to me, and this is the first Tivo like device I 
have ever used. In fact, unless I am on a different version than you, what 
you describe below is exactly how my Guide works:

If I hit OK on the program in the Guide, a menu much like what you describe 
shows up and a simple down arrow > OK would select that it be the recorded 
show, and nothing is greyed out. Am I missing something?

My live TV is broken though, so it won't record anything but thats a 
different issue...
