Just for fun I took some of the suggestions on the list and put them
into the wishlist at toyla^H^H^H^H^Hnewegg.com and come up with this:

http://secure.newegg.com/app/WishList.asp?position=HISTORY&submit=VIEW&ID=956036

Clocking in at just over $800 it certainly isn't the cheapest way to
go but I think it covers most of the basics, as well as having parts
chosen for silence.

Rough specs:

2500+ AMD Barton
512 megs of Corsair Value select
That lovely Antec Overture (Pretty, but pricey!)
400 gigs of Seagate hard drives
Hauppauge PVR250 (most recording) (w/ remote)
Leadtek "WinFast TV2000 XP" (for conflict resolution)
GeForce 5200
Some generic DVD reader ($24, remember when these were expensive?)
Zalman's CPU cooler and a couple Vantec Stealth fans

Pretty, functional, and it'd make a pretty solid game machine as well.
 What do y'all think?
