again: does your modules.conf have an alsa section?  just because
something is a "clean install" doesn't mean it went through without a
hitch.  I am attempting to help here.

But I'll continue on for the sake of being a good sport.

If XMMS is not giving "device not found" type errors, then your volume
is probably just muted.

open an xterm and run "alsamixer" (without quotes)
unmute PCM and master (if muted they will have a "MM" on top) by
pressing the M key when they are highlighted.
hit ESC to exit.

let me know if that worked.  if it did you may want to store/restore
those settings on boot/shutdown or else your machine will boot up
muted
