I just noticed that I am using ALSA v 1.04. What packages do I need to grab
to update? Just 'kernel-module-alsa-2.6.8-1.521' and 'alsa-driver'?

I've also had troubles with alsa. They went away when I upgraded to 1.0.5a.
I also tried 1.0.6a since then and it didn't work as well.
Look at /usr/include/sound/version.h to see what version alsa you are
running (or cat /proc/asound/version). My sound hardware is ICH4 (Intel
82801DB).
