For those of you who have struggled with problems with some of the older 
Nvidia cards and the 6629 drivers, Let me (hopefully) save you some time.

After I tried every other fix on the net... this worked like a charm...
X would start before, but the Nvidia logo never went away, the logon 
screen wasn't rendered correctly. I could log on without seeing what I 
was doing, but the desktop wasn't any better.
