One last thing I just discovered.  To make matters worse - when you happen on a sub-channel which doesn't exist and things "lockup" you are forced back to that SAME sub-channel when you restart things.

Not sure how/why - but if you go into mythsetup - you find that your "Starting Channel" has been changed to the station you had last tried to go to (which was the one with the bad/missing sub-channel).

So - issue #3.
