Type

$ cat /proc/asound/version

and make sure you're using version 1.0.7.  Previously, I was using 1.0.6 from 
the stock Linux kernel which was my only problem.  The default asound.conf 
file is sufficient as long as you configure the application correctly (ie, 
use -ac hwac3 for mplayer, etc.).
