only if you want to use apt.

both multilib amnd non-multilib are appropriate. It really only
affects whether you will be able to use apt. For multilib use yum,
up2date or smart.

Without apt and with yum's bugs it isn't really easier to manage it,
so you need to decide on having multilib and no apt, or apt and no
multilib (and no openoffice, HelixPlayer). Check out
