I would also highly recommend using the denoise3d
filter available with MythTV playback described here
in the docs:

Note you can't use XmVC-accelerated playback and this
denoise filter. 

I record almost everything at 4000 Kbps (allows for 2
hrs of recording onto a DVD-R) and playback looks
pretty good at either 540p or 720p.
