One way to look at it would be to think of them as "Compression & Recording
profiles" as they really are about controlling the compression of the
feed more than the recording.

So for ATSC and DVB the feed is already compressed, so you could not
really have a compression profile for it.   You could have a transcoding
system for a live feed if you had enough CPU, but you probably don't! 
For pvr-x50 the compression is done in hardware but the parameters are
under software control, thus the ability to have a profile.
